Carson Viles in Indian Country Today

Environmental Studies major Carson Viles’s research on native language learning was featured in an article on Indian Country Today‘s website in June. For his senior thesis, Carson is conducting interviews with native language learners about techniques for learning native languages at home. Carson attests to the environmental importance of learning indigenous languages, saying that it “helped me better understand [my tribes’] connection to space and geography.” He is also critical of conventional media narratives that compare native people and languages to endangered species.
