I also have a half-time job in SUNY Cortland's Office of Student Disability Services. In that position, I coordinate test accomodations and assistive technology.

Manage special proactive projects for the foundation and participate in responsive grant making activities. My primary responsibility is overseeing the foundation's participation in a collaborative of two foundations and about 20 nonprofit organizations that promotes sustainability and equity in planning for transit-oriented development in the Bay Area. I also serve on the collaborative's management team. Other areas of special interest in my grant making and proactive work include global warming, sustainable food systems, and environmental justice.

As usual, I live a dual life. I work part-time at CDM, a large engineering consulting firm, as an environmental compliance specialist/engineer and I am working on my Ph.D. in history at UC-Davis.
My project is to write the first historical analysis of the 1969 Santa Barbara Oil Spill. The Spill was a formative event for U.S. environmental policy in the last part of the 20th Century. I am focusing on two main areas in my analysis. First is the interaction of science, technology, and science policy surrounding the very public debates about damage due to the Spill. Second is the role that Cold War rhetoric and policy played in shaping the debates between environmentalists, industry representatives, and governmental officials. I hope to finish in early 2008.

I work on implementation of the Nebraska Natural Legacy Project (NNLP), a statewide wildlife action plan to conserve wildlife and their habitats through the proactive, voluntary conservation actions of partners, communities and individuals. Every state has a wildlife action plan. I do a lot of outreach about Nebraska's plan, and I'm still trying to figure out how best to do that!
The NNLP was developed with the assistance of over 25 partner organizations and with input from people all over Nebraska in public meetings held throughout the state. Habitat improvement and wildlife conservation in Nebraska are especially challenging because 97% of the land is privately owned and much of it cultivated or grazed, so partnerships with and programs for landowners are really important.
Nebraska's wildlife plan identifies 40 Biologically Unique Landscapes, over 500 at-risk species, the stresses on their habitats, and the conservation actions to reduce those stresses. Invasive species are one of the biggest threats to species and habitats throughout the state. Much of the activity on the ground right now is focused on knocking back invasive species through mechanical clearing and prescribed fire and on developing grazing management strategies that are compatible with maintaining and improving biological diversity.
